Over the course of more than a year, photographer Elizaveta Bogachova created 60 portraits of drag artists, queer and non-binary people, most of them living in Berlin.

Together, we began exploring the work as a temporary piece and how to draw references to the films Bogachova researched, which explored a spectrum of the LGBTQIA+ experience in classic Hollywood cinema before finding the right words. We created a version of the work that challenges notions of the gaze. Whereas in a photography exhibition, the visitor can wander and choose how actively or passively, and how quickly or patiently, they wish to interact with the prints, this slow-technique piece puts time in the hands of the artists.

Together with El Galpon in Lima, we invited visitors to take their time. Embrace the silence and find solace in this space.

For the second half of the evening, we invited artist Mágica to share her work as we explore broader ideas about the image in relation to observation. Mágica (María Jesús) is a trans computational artist, composer, and researcher. Mágica performed an audiovisual set using TouchDesigner with live Kinect capture, where the audiences could see themselves become part of the image, as gender fluid and formless, in an explosion of colour and play.
